Diagonal Stripe Scarf

I love cables, but have been wanting to play with creating texture and patterns with simple knit and purl stitches for a while. After making a bunch of Seed Stitch Scarves I figured giving a different textured scarf a shot would be fun. As it turns out, diagonal ribbing is fairly straightforward but looks amazing. The yarn is nice and chunky and warm so it's a pretty quick knit, and if you can't decide between the regular and infinity version, well, why not try both? ;)

Feel free to make as many of these for yourself or as gifts or donations, but please don't sell them for profit.

DIFFICULTY

Beginner

DIMENSIONS

Regular scarf:

18cm (7") wide
195cm (77") long

Infinity scarf:

18cm (7") wide
97.5cm (38.5") long after attaching ends

GAUGE

14 sts and 16 rows to 10cm (4") measured over the eight rows of the pattern in size 8mm/US 11 needles.

To knit a tension swatch - cast on a multiple of 4 sts + 2.

YARN

We Are Knitters petite wool yarn, 2 balls. 100% Peruvian wool, 280m/306 yards total for project. Pictured in pearl grey.

RECOMMENDED NEEDLES

8mm/US 11 needles.
For the infinity version you will need 1 extra needle that is 8mm or larger.

NOTES

This pattern is reversible, so there is no right or wrong side.

If you want to make the infinity version but don't want to do the provisional cast on and 3 needle bind off, simply make the regular scarf and sew the ends together.

ABBREVIATIONS

CO - Cast on
K - Knit
P - Purl
BO - Bind off

PATTERN

For the regular scarf: CO 26.
For the infinity scarf: CO 26 using a provisional cast on.

Row 1: (K2, P2) until last two stitches, K2
Row 2: (P2, K2) until last two stitches, P2
Row 3: P1, (K2, P2) until last stitch, K1
Row 4: P1, (K2, P2) until last stitch, K1
Row 5: (P2, K2) until last two stitches, P2
Row 6: (K2, P2) until last two stitches, K2
Row 7: K1, (P2, K2) until last stitch, P1
Row 8: K1, (P2, K2) until last stitch, P1

Repeat these 8 rows until the scarf is 195 cm, ending on Row 7 or 8.

For the regular scarf: BO all stitches
For the infinity scarf: Remove waste yarn from cast on and put stitches on an 8mm needle. Make sure both needles are pointing in the same direction. Using the third needle, cast off using a 3 needle bind off.

Finishing

Sew in ends. If you made a regular scarf but want to make it an infinity scarf, sew the short ends together.
