The Basketseed Cowl

I have a soft spot for basketweave. When my mother realised that someone had taught me how to knit, she took pity on me and taught me how to purl. After I tried it for a while I realised that the knit and the purl sides of my knitting looked different, and I figured out how to do a somewhat modified basketweave stitch for myself. The first pattern I ever designed was a basketweave scarf.

Unfortunately the edges tend to curl up, but I've been wanting to try a chunky knit cowl pattern recently and knitting in the round seemed like the perfect solution to the problem of the edges curling. I've been playing with seed stitch a lot too recently and couldn't resist throwing some in, so the Basketseed cowl was born!

SIZE

23.5cm (9") diameter
32cm (12") length


GAUGE
13 sts and 20 rows to 10cm (4") on size 8mm/US 11 needles over the basketweave pattern (pattern from the body section).


YARN
We Are Knitters petite wool yarn, 1 ball MC and 1 ball CC. 100% Peruvian wool. Pictured in spotted black (CC) and black (MC).


RECOMMENDED NEEDLES

8mm/US 11 50cm (16”) circular needles
OR
Five 8mm/US 11 DPNs


ABBREVIATIONS 
CO - Cast on
K - Knit
P - Purl
BO - Bind off

NOTES
This pattern is reversible, so there is no right or wrong side. You can work it in one solid colour if you wish, just ignore the directions for switching to MC/CC.


PATTERN
Using CC, CO 60 sts, join to work in the round being careful not to twist. If using DPNs, split evenly over four needles (15 sts per needle).

Bottom border - seed stitch
Rounds 1-2: (K1, P1) until end of row
Rounds 3-4: (P1, K1) until end of row
Rounds 5-6: (K1, P1) until end of row
Rounds 7-8: (P1, K1) until end of row
Round 9: (K1, P1) until end of row
Switch to MC
Round 10: (K1, P1) until end of row

Body - basketweave

Rounds 1-7: (K5, P5) until end of row
Rounds 8-14: (P5, K5) until end of row

Repeat these 14 rows twice more, switching to CC at the beginning of the final row. 42 rows in total.

Top border - seed stitch

As for top border, but do not switch to MC at the start of Round 10.
BO all stitches.

Finishing
Sew in ends.
