Knitting stitch pattern: Honeycomb stitch

This hexagon stitch is a great first pattern for beginners who know how to knit and purl and want to start working with multiple colours. It's surprisingly easy to do but looks really impressive - a win-win situation if there ever was one!

DIFFICULTY

Intermediate. See notes section at the bottom if you're unfamiliar with reading knitting patterns.

PATTERN

Knit with two colours over a multiple of 6 stitches + 4, with a 16 row repeat.

NOTES

To calculate how many stitches to cast on: decide how many hexagons you'd like and multiply it by 6, then add 4.

Abbreviations
RS - Right side (front of the work)
WS - Wrong side (back of the work)
K - Knit
P - Purl
Sl2 wyib - Hold yarn behind the left needle as if to knit, slip two sts from the left needle to the right needle without working them.
Sl2 wyif - Hold yarn in front of the left needle as if to purl, slip two sts from the left needle to the right needle without working them.
MC - Main colour
CC - Contrasting colour

MC forms the insides of the hexagons, CC forms the borders.
In the image, MC is yellow and CC is grey.

To read the pattern - repeat anything in parentheses until you only have as many stitches left as it says for that row.

At the beginning of each RS row, twist the strands of CC and MC once. Keep the strand you're not using fairly loose. This keeps both strands running up the side of the work.
