Seed stitch scarf set

Seed stitch is a beautiful way to add some texture to a garment, and it's great as a beginner's first pattern - all it uses is knit and purl stitches. I first made this chunky infinity scarf about three years ago, and it seemed like the perfect thing to make with a batch of yarn I got from We Are Knitters. Then I decided to make a regular version too. They ended up being lovely and soft and very, very warm.

If you'd like a matching beanie to go with your scarf, go check out the Slouchy Mushroom Beanie pattern.

Feel free to make as many of these for yourself or as gifts or donations, but please don't sell them for profit.

DIFFICULTY

Beginner

DIMENSIONS

Regular scarf:
20cm (8") wide
188cm (74") long

Infinity scarf:
20cm (8") wide
94cm (37") long after attaching ends together

GAUGE

13 sts and 16 rows to 10cm (4") measured over the four rows of the pattern.

YARN

We Are Knitters petite wool yarn, pictured in spotted grey and wine. 2 balls.

RECOMMENDED NEEDLES

8mm/US 11 needles.
For the infinity version you will need 1 extra needle that is 8mm or larger.

NOTES

See Knitty's standard list for abbreviations and techniques.

This pattern is reversible, so there is no right or wrong side.

If you want to make the infinity version but don't want to do the provisional cast on and 3 needle bind off, simply make the regular scarf and sew the ends together.

PATTERN

For the regular scarf: CO 26.
For the infinity scarf: CO 26 using a provisional cast on.

Row 1: (K1, P1) until end of row
Row 2: (K1, P1) until end of row
Row 3: (P1, K1) until end of row
Row 4: (P1, K1) until end of row

Repeat these 4 rows until the scarf is 188cm.

For the regular scarf: BO all stitches
For the infinity scarf: Remove waste yarn from cast on and put stitches on an 8mm needle. Make sure both needles are pointing in the same direction. Using the third needle, cast off using a 3 needle bind off.

Finishing

Sew in ends.
